Quick Reference

FJ60 vs FJ62
FJ60 (1981–1987) FJ62 (1987–1990)
Engine 3F — carbureted, 4.0L 3F-E — fuel injected, 4.0L
Fuel System Carburetor EFI with AFM
Oil Capacity 7.4 qts (with filter) 8 qts (with filter)
Timing Belt No — timing chain, no replacement interval Yes — replace every 60,000 miles. Interference engine.
🛢️

Every Oil Change

3,000 – 7,500 mi
  • Engine oil & filter — 10W-30 conventional or 10W-40 synthetic. 5,000 miles on quality synthetic is fine. 3F-E takes 8 qts — confirm level after fill.
  • Check all fluid levels — coolant, brake, power steering, clutch reservoir
  • Check belts for cracking, glazing, fraying
  • Check hoses for soft spots, cracks, swelling at clamps
  • Inspect air filter — replace every 15,000–30,000 miles or when visibly dirty
  • Check tire pressure and condition
🔧

Every 15,000 Miles

15K
  • Air filter — replace, or more frequently in dusty conditions
  • FJ62 Fuel filter — inline filter, replace every 15–30k
  • FJ60 Fuel filter — bowl filter, inspect and clean
  • Spark plugs — inspect, gap check. Replace at 30k. NGK or Denso OEM equivalent recommended.
  • PCV valve — inspect and clean or replace (~$8 part, commonly overlooked)
  • Brake fluid — test with strips for moisture content; flush if >2% water
  • Brake pads and rotors — check wear, look for scoring
  • Lubricate door hinges, hood hinges, latches
⚙️

Every 30,000 Miles

30K
  • Spark plugs — replace. NGK BPR5ES-11 (FJ60/62 standard). NGK or Denso preferred over Champion.
  • Coolant flush — full drain and refill with Toyota Red (SLLC) or green 50/50 mix. Don't just top off — flush completely. The 3F/3F-E runs hot when cooling system is neglected.
  • Power steering fluid — flush and replace. ATF or dedicated PS fluid.
  • Clutch adjustment (manual transmission) — check free play, adjust if needed
  • Inspect/replace belts — alternator, power steering, A/C, smog pump. A broken belt can leave you stranded.
  • Inspect/replace radiator hoses — upper and lower. At 30+ years these are high risk.
  • Brake fluid flush — full flush every 2 years or 30k regardless of moisture test
🔩

Every 60,000 Miles

60K
  • Transmission fluid — Auto (A440F): Dexron III/ATF+4. Manual (H55F): GL-4 75W-90. If you don't know when it was last done, do it now.
  • Transfer case fluid — drain and refill. 80W-90 GL-4 or GL-5. Often overlooked for years on used trucks.
  • Front and rear differential fluid — drain and refill both. 80W-90 GL-5. Add LS friction modifier if limited-slip rear diff.
  • Front wheel bearing repack — grease and inspect. FJ60/62 uses tapered roller bearings that need periodic greasing. Many shops unfamiliar with this — find a specialist or DIY.
  • Valve clearance adjustment — both 3F and 3F-E require periodic lash adjustment. Intake 0.15mm / Exhaust 0.25mm (cold). Rattly cold start = overdue.
  • Critical FJ62 Only Timing belt replacement — every 60,000 miles. Not optional. The 3F-E is an interference engine — broken belt = bent valves = engine rebuild. Unknown history = replace immediately.
  • FJ62 Water pump — replace when doing timing belt (labor is already open)
  • Thermostat — replace when doing cooling system work
  • Inspect/replace U-joints — check all driveshaft U-joints for play. Worn U-joints cause vibration and eventual failure.
🏔️

Every 100,000 Miles

100K / As Needed
  • Complete cooling system service — radiator flush, new hoses upper/lower, new thermostat, new radiator cap, inspect water pump. The 3F/3F-E runs hot when neglected.
  • FJ62 Fuel injector service — professional cleaning or replacement. Rough idle and hard starts on high-mileage FJ62s are often injector-related.
  • FJ60 Carburetor rebuild — rebuild or replace. A worn carb causes rich running, poor fuel economy, rough idle.
  • Power steering rack inspection — check for leaks at rack boots and pump
  • Clutch replacement (if worn) — inspect free play, check for slipping
  • Engine mounts — inspect for cracks and collapse
  • Exhaust inspection — inspect for cracks, rust-through, loose hangers
📅

Every 2 Years

Time-Based
  • Brake fluid flush — moisture absorption is time-based, not just mileage-based
  • Coolant flush — even low-mileage trucks need fresh coolant
  • Inspect all rubber components — hoses, belts, boots, seals. Rubber degrades with age regardless of use.
📝

FJ60-Specific Notes

3F Carbureted
Carb Jets: The 3F carb jets clog with old fuel. If you bought a truck that sat, rebuild the carb.
Choke: Manual choke on early FJ60s. Automatic choke on later models. Choke should fully open when warm — if not, engine runs rich.
Timing Chain: FJ60 uses a timing chain (not belt) — no replacement interval, but rattling at startup indicates wear.
Smog Pump: Many FJ60 owners delete the smog pump. If deleted, use a shorter belt on the appropriate pulley.
📝

FJ62-Specific Notes

3F-E Fuel Injected
Timing Belt: Treat as a safety item. Unknown history = replace immediately. $200–400 in parts. Broken belt = $2,000+ engine repair.
AFM (Air Flow Meter): A known weak point. If the engine stumbles at certain RPMs or dies after warming up, test the AFM.
Cold Start Injector: Hard starts when cold are often the cold start injector or its thermal time switch.
Oil Consumption: Some 3F-E engines consume oil over 150k. Normal is <1 qt per 1,000 miles. More than that = worn rings or valve seals.
